| 31/12 | Moel Siabod | 1M | Walking | 14:11 Party of eight out walking. Casualty sustained a suspected fractured ankle. The Police asked them to 'stay put' and the team was deployed to find them in the mist. Once located thanks to their whistles the casualty was diagnosed with a fractured fibula, treated and stretchered off. The team then transported him to Ysbyty Gwynedd. 19:12 |
| 29/12 | Conwy Falls bridge | 1M | Canoeing | 15:57 Canoeist missed breakout and became stranded in eddy above rock and waterfalls. By the time the team arrived he had been self rescued. 16:44 |
| 21/11 | Glyderau | 3M | Walking | 16:25 The party set off from Gwern Gof Isaf to traverse the Glyderau. They ascended the ridge to Llyn Caseg Ffraith and then onto Glyder Fach in reasonable weather, but then became disorientated in cloud somewhere on the route to Glyder Fawr. They mistakenly descended a considerable distance towards Pen y Pass before retracing their steps back up to the Glyder Fawr area. Another mistake in navigation brought them onto the steep ground to the south of the Idwal Stream; at this point it was dark and they felt unable to continue so rang for help. As they had torches and a GPS grid reference it was a straightforward snatch for the Team. 22Sqn were training in the area and had a recce of the cas site, but due to poor flying conditions and non-urgency of the situation they were not deployed. 20:55 |
| 10/11 | Tryfan North Ridge | 1M/2F | Scrambling | 14:30 A party of 9 were ascending the North Ridge. One complained near the North Tower area that an old foot injury was being aggravated. She and another female started to descend and collected another person who had been left by his group to descend alone. They drifted too far to the west and ended up at the top of Wrinkled Slab on the west face of Tryfan. They had dropped their rucksack and had no torches or whistles. They contacted the team by mobile 'phone and team members were dispatched to try and locate them as they were unsure of their position due to low cloud. They were finally located and lowered to safety by 4 team members. 19:00 |
| 30/10 | Crimpiau | 1M | Walking | 17:50 The casualty had set off from Capel Curig in the early afternoon to find a good viewpoint from which to paint Llyn Crafnant. On his return he became confused in the rocky bluffs below the Crimpiau and as darkness fell he became trapped between a crag and a river. Although he could see the lights of Capel Curig he had lost the confidence to continue in the dark, so called his wife and 999. The Team spotted his torch from the roadside and quickly extricated him from his location. Tea and the warmth of Base soon revived him. 19:30 |
| 29/10 | Y Garn | Walking | 18:25 |
|
| 25/10 | Bangor Area | 1M | Missing from Hospital | 03:50 At about 20:30 an elderly male patient was discovered missing from one of the wards at Ysbyty Gwynedd. OVMRO was called and a Team Leader attended the hospital to assess the situation. Shortly afterwards the patient was located by a SARDA dog and treated in A/E for mild hypothermia. 06:30 |
| 24/10 | Idwal Stream | 1F | Walking | 12:40 The casualty was walking around Cwm Idwal with her husband when she suddenly became unwell at the Difficult Step over Idwal Stream. She quickly became unresponsive and vomited. The Team responded promptly as one Team member was already walking in that area. 22 Squadron were asked to assist and provided a rapid evacuation to Ysbyty Gwynedd whilst Team members escorted her husband from the hill. 16:00 |
| 21/10 | Amphitheatre Buttress | 1M/1F | Climbing | 13:40 The well experienced couple were climbing pitch 5 of Amphitheatre Buttress when the man experienced back spasms which rendered him unable to move. It was thought to be a re-occurrence of an old injury. His partner called for help by mobile phone. Three Team members and the 22 Squadron winchman were deployed on to the crag to treat the casualty. Due to problems with the aircraft, a quick winch of the casualty and crew member was carried out and they proceeded directly to the hospital. OVMRO team members then assisted his partner from the climb and walked back to the road head 18:20 |
| 01/10 | West face Tryfan | 1M/1F | Walking | 12:30 The couple became disoriented in cloud on steep ground on the West Face of Tryfan and rang 999 for assistance, approx 10 minutes after the earlier incident was reported. When the Team Leader contacted them by mobile phone and advised them they would have to stay at their location until the other rescue was sorted, they volunteered the information that they had walked past the other casualty 10 minutes earlier. They were advised to make their way back to that location to meet up with the rescue Team. This they did, and they were walked off the mountain with the MRT. 17:30 |
| 01/10 | N Ridge Tryfan | 1M | Scrambling | 12:30 The party of two were ascending the North Ridge of Tryfan when the casualty slipped and injured his knee on a sharp rock. Due to the time of the call-out (mid-week), the Team Leader requested assistance from 22 Sqn and RAF Valley MRT to support the OVMRO troops in a potentially long stretcher carry due to poor weather conditions. The casualty received treatment at the scene and then was able to descend with assistance to a suitable area for winching. He was flown to Ysbyty Gwynedd for assessment whilst his friend returned to the road with Team members. 17:30 |
| 30/09 | East Face Tryfan | 2M/2F | Climbing | 19:20 The party of four started Grooved Arete at about midday, with one leader and the other 3 being brought up on 2 ropes. They were initially held up by a rope of two just ahead of them, however it was still early evening by the time they reached The Haven as 2 of the party struggled on the previous pitch. After much discussion the party agreed that they needed assistance and called 999. 22 Sqn were called and, after a quick recce, flew 8 MRT members onto the East Face to extract the group. After completing another tasking the helo returned, winched the casualties and the Team members and returned everyone to Oggie Base. 01:30 |
| 22/09 | Below Bochlwyd | 1F | Camping ! | 23:10 The group of three females had decided to camp near to the Bochlwyd stream after a late descent from the Glyderau. The casualty was alone in one tent whilst the other two women shared the other tent. Unknown to them, the casualty’s tent was hit by a strong gust of wind which blew it (and her) approx 20 metres down the hillside, causing her to injure her shoulder. She managed to make her way back to the other tent to raise the alarm. A small party of team members went to her assistance, and after pain relief was administered she was able to walk down to the road. She was then transferred to Ysbyty Gwynedd in the Team landrover. 02:10 |
| 17/09 | Glyders | 1M | Walking | 16:30 |
| 06/09 | Idwal Slabs | 1M/1F | Climbing | 19:20 |
| 03/09 | Pen yr Ole Wen | 1F | Walking | 12:05 The casualty has a medical condition that occasionally manifests itself when under stress or cold or exertion is excessive. What triggered this attack is unknown but she was unable to move safely from where they were situated on a rock step on the East ridge of Pen yr Ole Wen. Her husband contacted the police via mobile phone. The Team was activated and after consultation with the injured party a helicopter from RAF Valley was requested. This was able to extract the casualty from her location and return her to Oggie Base. A small team of members was flown up to escort the husband down to Base. The couple drove off themselves with no further treatment from Team Members 14:10 |
| 02/09 | Llyn-y-Cwn | 1M | Walking | 17:05 The casualty was descending towards Gwastdnant from Llyn-y-Cwn and slipped from the path tumbling about 6m to be stopped by the sheep fence above the waterfall. He sustained a fractured right ankle. His companions called 999 and due to severe overload, LLMRT requested that OVMRO assist with this incident. Two vehicles and 11 team members were sent to Llanberis to work with 2 members of LLMRT on the short evacuation down to the road. An unfortunate slip from a muddy path down to a sheep fence that stopped him rolling further down the hill into a waterfall. 20:25 |
| 22/08 | Tryfan North Ridge | 1m/1F | Scrambling | 15:00 The couple were planning to climb the North ridge of Tryfan, but had no knowledge of the route or where it started. They parked at the walled carpark and started to ascend the area under the West face. At some point they could see across to the Canon rock on the North Ridge and decided to climb a gully line to reach it. They ascended the gully which became progressively steeper and more slippery, until they could neither go up nor down. They were both in precarious positions but managed to ring 999. 22Sqn were initially operational elsewhere so NW1 were asked to assist, whilst a hill party set off on foot. NW1 were unable to reach the pair, and when 22 Sqn arrived it was decided that they would have to be moved to a better area for winching. The hill party secured the casualties and then roped them up the gully to better ground. 22 Sqn then winched the pair and flew them to Oggie Base. Both casualties felt that they would not have been able to hold on for much longer, and both realised the serious implication of a fall from their position. A very lucky pair. 20:25 |
| 21/08 | Tryfan North Ridge | ? | Scrambling | 13:45 The informant was climbing Bristly Ridge when a man in front of him became stuck in a steep gully and asked for help. Due to a poor phone signal it was difficult to gather any more information. As OVMRO troops were already deployed in a search, 22 Sqn were asked to help. Due to variable cloud cover in the area 3 troops were flown to the top of the ridge and down-climbed it whilst the helicopter flew over the area. No-one found on the ridge. A person later checked in with SNP warden Alan Pritchard to say he had asked for help but had subsequently been helped by a passer by. Good intention on the part of the informant. 15:45 |
| 21/08 | Tryfan North Ridge | 1M/1F | Scrambling | 10:20 The casualty and her husband were ascending the North Ridge when she fell a short distance on to her outstretched arm. Due to the severe pain in her shoulder she was unable to walk down and called for help. As OVMRO troops were already deployed on a search near Betws y Coed 22 Sqn were asked to assist. A back up party assembled at Base but were not deployed as 22 Sqn winched the casualty and flew her to Ysbyty Gwynedd for treatment. 11:30 |
| 20/08 | Tryfan North Ridge | 5 | Walking | 17:30 The family had climbed the North Ridge of Tryfan to the summit. On the way back down the ridge they got stuck in a steep, scree filled gully and rang for help. As OVMRO troops were committed to a search at Betws y Coed, 22 Sqn were diverted from the other incident to lift the family off the mountain and drop them at Oggie Base. Unfortunately, all their rucksacks(containing car keys, money etc) were left on the mountain. Two team members tried to retrieve them but failed to find them in the darkness. The following day, a team member retrieved the bags and reunited them with their owners 19:00 |
| 20/08- 21/08 |
River Conwy | 1M | Walking | 16:00 The casualty was walking by the river with his mother and brother when he accidentally fell into the water. He disappeared from sight within seconds in the fast flowing waters. A major search was instigated as soon as the accident was reported. This involved Civilian MRTs, RAF MRT, Fire Service Rope Rescue and Water Rescue crews, NWP, Ambulance Service, Police Underwater Dive Unit, 22 Squadron, Helimed, NWP helicopter and civilian volunteers. Both the river and the river banks were searched until well after dark. The search resumed the next day and the boy’s body was recovered from a deep pool by the Police Dive Unit at 6pm the following day. A tragic accident. 21:00 (21/08) |
| 19/08 | Cwm Lloer | 1M/1F | Walking | 08:00 The party of 2 set off from Aber on the North coast to cover the Snowdon 15 Peaks over 2 days with a one night camp. At 20:00 on the Saturday evening they camped at Ffynnon Lloer. Due to deterioration in the weather and collapse of the tent at about 3am, they started to walk down to the A5 at Tal-y-Llyn Ogwen. They became trapped by the high flood water coming from the Afon Lloer. 22 Squadron were able to lift them and drop them off at Oggie Base. 09:00 |
| 01/08 | N Ridge of Tryfan | 2M | Walking | 19:15 The family had started to ascend the North Ridge of Tryfan but at some point the parents decided to turn back. It would seem that the children were already ahead of the parents at this time and continued up. After waiting at the road for an hour the father decided to go back up the mountain to find his children, and shortly afterwards some passers-by called the Rescue Team on behalf of the anxious mother. Whilst the Team were gathering more information from the mother and preparing hill parties, the father and children were spotted on the lower part of the North Ridge. It transpired that some climbers had helped the children until their father arrived. The family were reunited and the Team carried on their training exercise. 20:00 |
| 27/07 | Gribin Facet area | 1M | Walking | 13:50 Call for assistance routed via Coastguard. The casualty had had brain surgery earlier in the year, and subsequently had suffered several fits. He did not feel unwell at start of the walk. The family were walking on the path between Bochlwyd and Idwal when he realised he was about to experience another fit. He managed to sit down before the fit started. His family called for assistance, and luckily 22 Sqn were training in the area and were diverted to the casualty location immediately. Two team members were also diverted to the cas scene to join the winchman, and 22 sqn flew 3 more MRT to the site. The casualty was transferred to hospital by aircraft, and his family escorted off the hill. 16:00 |
| 27/07 | Pen yr Ole Wen | 1M | Walking | 11:30 The casualty ascended most of the S Ridge of Pen yr Ole Wen with a group of friends but decided to turn back before the summit. The friends carried on with their planned route to Capel Curig. On the steep part of the descent he accidentally knocked his glasses off with his trekking pole. Being very short sighted he could not find the glasses or continue his descent safely so called for help. He was able to se his GPS to give the team an accurate location A party of two were dispatched from Idwal, the casualty and glasses (minus one lens) were located and he was escorted back to the Brewshack for hot chocolate. 13:15 |
| 24/07 | Moel Siabod | 1F | Walking | 16:10 The casualty was descending from the summit of Moel Siabod, with her partner and daughter, when she fell on scree and sustained a laceration to her head. The initial request indicated that an ambulance was needed to meet the casualty at Plas y Brenin, but the Police and MRT were not required. The Ambulance Service first responder was also an OVMRO team member so he requested the Team be put on stand-by. At some point Sharon vomited so the Team were then activated and escorted the casualty from the mountain to the waiting ambulance 20:00 |
| 22/07 | Cwm Dolwyddelan | 1M | Walking | 20:35 The casualty had set off from Dolwyddelan to go to Porthmadog to visit a friend. It is not known what the route entailed, but at the time found he was less than 500m from Dolwyddelan. He claimed that he was having an anaphylactic reaction which may have been brought on by suffering a fall and hurting his hip. He claimed that he had self administered 2 epipens and was having breathing difficulties. After a prolonged search by 22 Squadron he was eventually located and flown to Ysbyty Gwynedd. The hospital could find nothing physically wrong with the casualty. NWP are to follow up the case as he has an extensive history of attention seeking hoax calls. The RAF wish to prosecute as the helicopter was committed to this job when it could have been better utilised elsewhere. 00:45 |
| 21/07 | Carneddau | 2M | Walking | 06:00 The party started at 16:30 20/07/07 from the Conwy Valley intending to walk the first part of the 3000ft peaks. At some point they became lost on Carnedd Llewelyn and asked for help. A Team Leader contacted them by mobile phone and talked them down to Bethesda. No OVMRO troops deployed. 09:30 |
| 19/07 | N Ridge Tryfan | 1F | Walking | 18:00 |
| 15/07 | Tal y Waun | 1M | Walking | 15:50 Whilst out walking, the casualty lost balance and fell into a gorse bush. When he was helped up he then appeared to have slurred speech, so his party walked with him to Tal y Waun farm and then called for help. It was thought that he may have suffered a stroke. The Team arrived at Tal y Waun before Helimed or the NHS ambulance, so the casualty was given oxygen and reassured. He was then taken to Ysbyty Gwynedd by ambulance 16:50 |
| 12/07 | Penmaenmawr area | 1M | Missing from home | 17:15 The missing person left home at about 14:15 on Weds 11/07/07, having packed a rucksack and telling his brother he was going for a walk. There was a possible sighting of him walking up Mountain Lane, above Penmaenmawr, at 20:00 the same evening. He did not turn up for work the next day and had not returned home. The Team were called to search the hills, rivers and woodland behind Penmaenmawr at 17:30 on Thurs 12/07/07. OVMRO and other organisations carried out searches that evening and all of the next day. During the late afternoon of 13/07/07 a friend of the family informed the Police that he had seen the missing person the previous evening. At this point, the search was called off and NWP are continuing investigations. Update on 16/07/07 from NWP: The missing person has been traced in Germany safe and well 17:00 |
| 07/07 | Llyn y Cwn | 1M | Walking | 17:45 The friends were just beginning their descent from Glyder Fawr when one slipped and twisted his ankle between two rocks. His friend helped him slowly down to Llyn y Cwn then rang 999 to request help. A number of Team members gathered at Oggie Base and prepared to go on the hill, but luckily 22 squadron managed to locate and extract the casualty and friend very quickly. The friend was dropped off at Base and the casualty flown to Ysbyty Gwynedd 19:30 |
| 07/07 | Carneddau | ? | ? | 13:45 The informant, a member of OVMRO, reported hearing shouts for help and whistles whilst walking from Carnedd Llewelyn to 3185 (Cefn Ysgulion Duon). He saw people moving across the hillside below him shouting 'Peter' and apparently searching for someone. The Team vehicle and several Team members were deployed to the Waterworks at Gerlan. Whilst on route, both 22 Squadron and the Police Helicopter NW1 thoroughly searched the area but could find no sign of anyone needing assistance. The decision was made for the OVMRO team to return to base and to close the incident. A false alarm with good intent 15:30 |
| 23/06 | Carneddau | Lots | Scrambling | 18:11 The team were called to assist Party one down from the summit of Carnedd Llewelyn, as one of the party was suffering from exhaustion. As Team members started up the hill, they came across another group of 8 people (Party 2) close to Llugwy reservoir, who had one member suffering from mild hypothermia and was near to collapse. This party were walked a short distance to the Landrover and returned to Base, where the casualty was taken to Ysbyty Gwynedd by ambulance to be assessed. Party one were then located and walked down the mountain to the waiting Landrover at Llugwy. The exhausted member of this party did not need further treatment. Probably, neither party should have continued so late with deteriorating weather conditions. 01:45 |
| 16-17/06 | Tryfan East Face | 1M | Scrambling | 18:11 Team received a call from the wife of a man who had sustained a fall somewhere on the East Face. The cloud base was just at the lip of Cwm Tryfan but 22 Sqdn. did a fantastic job ferrying troops as high as they could. Due to the mist it was initially difficult to locate the casualty as the wife was unfamiliar with the terrain. Once located the wife was walked down and their dog captured, abseiled off and evacuated. A long (in time) lower followed to recover the male to Cwm Tryfan and on to the hospital. It is suspected the man died of head injuries sustained during a short 20-30 foot fall. 05:10 |
| 10/06 | Top of Gribin Ridge | 1F | Walking | The casualty was part of a Mountain Leaders training course.
Whilst crossing the boulder field below Castell y Gwynt, she tripped
and sustained a facial laceration and painful neck. The instructors managed
to stop the facial bleeding and she carried on walking to the top of
the Gribin Ridge. However, at this point she began to feel faint and
the instructors wisely decided to call for help. One OVMRO team member was diverted from a walk around Idwal and 22 Squadron were contacted. The helicopter was on scene first and flew the casualty to Ysbyty Gwynedd. An unfortunate accident in a very well managed group. |
| 02/06 | Ffynnon Llugwy | 1M | Fell running | The casualty was competing, in a team of four, in the Welsh 1000m Mountain Race. They started from Aber in sunny conditions but encountered thick cloud at approximately 1000ft. At some point the casualty slipped, resulting in a tumbling fall of about 150 metres. Unfortunately, although the Team and 22 Squadron attended the scene very quickly, the casualty did not survive his injuries. |
| 01/06 | N Ridge Tryfan (above Milestone) | 1M/1F | Walking | The couple left the road at 12:15 to ascend Tryfan. It would appear that they started climbing the North Ridge, then continued along the Eastern Traverse until they reached steep ground near to South Gully. At this point they decided to retrace their steps. Unfortunately, on their way down the ridge they drifted too much to the west and ended up above the Milestone Buttress. One of them felt unable to go up or down, so they rang 999. A small team were despatched to locate and extract the pair. |

| 26/05 | East Face, Tryfan | 1M | Climbing | 11:00 The casualty was leading the first pitch of Pinnacle Rib. At approx 50 ft, he slipped and fell backwards. Unfortunately, his runners failed, resulting in a tumbling fall on to the heather covered slope at the base of the climb. During the fall he sustained injuries to his lower back, pelvis and right femur. 22 squadron dropped the winchman and then flew 4 MRT to the cas site for assistance. The casualty was treated and then flown to Ysbyty Gwynedd, whilst the MRT escorted the rest of the group off the mountain. An onlooker, not related to the team, managed to video the winch using a mobile phone and has posted it on YouTube under the username flytzen1. |
| 21/05 | Castell y Gwynt | 1F | Walking | 15:20 The casualty slipped, twisted her ankle and felt it crack. Another member of the party strapped the ankle with bandages but she was still unable to weightbear. 22 Squadron were asked to assist, and the casualty was airlifted to Ysbyty Gwynedd. |
| 12/05 | Bochlwyd Path | 1M | Walking | 18.00 400m above Milestone carpark. The party had walked up Cwm Tryfan to Bwlch Tryfan. | 12/05 | Bochlwyd Path | 1M | Walking | 15.25 The party set off at 10:30 from the road and ascended Tryfan. As they were descending Western Gully the casualty slipped and injured his ankle. Members of his party (most of whom were doctors) assisted him down the mountain until he could go no further. They stopped on the Bochlwyd path and called for assistance. Two Team members made their way to the casualty site whilst 22Sqn, who were already in the area, were contacted. The casualty was then airlifted to Ysbyty Gwynedd for treatment. |

Three were 17 yrs old with a slightly older leader. They had been part of a 30 strong group which had left the Ogwen valley at 09.00 to go over the Carneddau and camp at Llyn Dulyn. In the low cloud and heavy showers they had become separated. They decided to pitch the two man tent on a steep slope high above the Afon Wen/ All their kit was wet through and one lad was shivering due to the wet conditions. The team drove up to the pumping station above Gerlan to deploy. When the team arrived at the cas site, there was a state of disarray. Wet kit strewn on the hillside. No one prepared for a walk out. No boots on. The team 'persuaded' them to walk down and met them at the bottom of the slope, assisted with the stream crossing, and marched them out of the Cwm.
